| BUTRINT, ALBANIA
DATES OF 2010 FIELD SCHOOLS 4th -24th July 2010
Butrint is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southern Albania where an Anglo-Albanian project has been working since 1994 to research the ancient city and develop the site as a tourist resource and training center. The training program has been held annually for Albanian students since 2000. This is organised by Albanian Heritage, an Albanian NGO.
In the summer of 2010 AUR will be offering once again an excavation field school on the Vrina Plain on the site of a Roman villa and associated cemetery. This will be a wide ranging introduction to archaeological excavation where students are led progressively through the various techniques and theoretical basis of modern fieldwork.
In addition a second field school will be offered for the first time in archaeological conservation and heritage management. The program 'Training in Conservation and Management of Cultural Heritage' is a new training program organized in cooperation between the Albanian Archaeological Service Agency (ASA) and Albanian Heritage. The training aims to provide students with general concepts regarding cultural heritage and its protection and the vital role of conservation in assuring the continuity of heritage values.
Both field schools will be conducted in English.
