Field Trip to the Basque Country

The two preliminary and one wrap-up meeting will take place at the American University of Rome located on via Petrolli Roselli 4. These meetings are obligatory for those taking the course for credit. The preliminary meeting is recommended for those not taking the course for credit.

Monday 20 Feb : Room B204 18:30-20:30.
“Basque Ball”. Award winning documentary by Julio Medem on the Basque Country.

Wednesday 22 Feb: Room B304. 18:30-19:30. The Basque Country. The History, politics, and culture of separatism.

Thursday 23 Feb: 11:05 Depart Ciampino RyanAir FR9155
13:30 Arrive Santander Check in to Bilbao hostel
17:00 Meeting with Jon Josu Imaz, President of the PNV
(Basque Nationalist Party)
19:00 Visit and presentation at Deusto University Institute of Human Rights.
Evening with students from Deusto University.

Friday 24 Feb: 09:00-10:00 I naki Zabaleta, Journalist at Universidad del Pais Vasco.
Transfer to Vitoria. Visit the Basque Parliament. Meetings with representatives of political parties.

Saturday 25 Feb. Guernica. Visit the historic site of Basque identity,original assembly building and museum (Casa de Juntas), the oak tree which is the symbol of Basque independence and the city which was the victim of the first aerial bombing of civilians (1937) and the subject of Picasso’s famous painting.

Afternoon. Bilbao. Viait the city and the Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum.

Sunday 26 Feb. Bilbao. Free morning to 11:00

Monday 27 Feb B204 18:30-19:30. Conclusions. Basque separatism in the 21st century.

Cost: Book your own ticket with RyanAir after having checked with Hanna Monola at Student Services. (h.monola@aur.edu or 06 5833 0919 ext 219) that there is still space. When you have booked your flight give Hanna your booking confirmation, passport or id number (for the visit to the Parliament), phone, and email. Lodging and transport within the Basque Country will be max. 120 euro, payment to Marita Luzon (m.luzon@aur.edu) by Friday 17 Feb.)
