AUR and Italian Libraries The American University of Rome maintains excellent relations with other libraries in Rome. Catalogs of these libraries can be accessed from the following links:

  • Biblioteche di Roma -  lists the catalogs of Roman municipal libraries
  • SBN network - lists the catalogs of Italian public libraries
  • URBE (Unione Romana Biblioteche Ecclesiastiche) – lists the library catalogs of the Ecclesiastical Academic Institutions in Rome
  • URBS (Unione Romana Biblioteche Scientifiche) – lists the catalogs of the Roman Scientific Library Union
  • CAS -  Center of American Studies catalog
An inter-library loan service is available with many of these libraries. During the academic year, our library staff consults with them on specific subjects and can arranges for students to visit and use these libraries. Professors also guide students in their specific research and arrange for students to visit specialized libraries in Rome. Students and faculty are encouraged to contact the library staff for assistance in locating research materials or for additional information.

Inter-library loans
No library can meet all the needs of all users. The library staff actively promote cooperation with other libraries and Library agencies to more effectively meet the needs of the community.

  • Obtaining the material: Only AUR student, faculty and staff are allowed to take out inter-library loans. The library staff can advise on which library in Rome is best to consult if a user is not entitled to this service. Reference and audio-visual materials cannot be obtained through inter-library loan.
  • Receiving and canceling inter-library loans: When inter-library loan items are received and processed, students will be notified immediately by phone or e-mail. Inter-library loan items will be held until the due date posted on them. Items that are not picked up by the due date will be returned to the lending library. Patrons are encouraged to contact the library staff if, for some reason, they are unable to pick up inter-library loan items or magazine/journal articles within the specified time limit.
  • Loan periods: The loan period for an inter-library loan is dependent on the policies of the lending library. Please note, It may take up to 3 weeks for an inter-library loan to arrive.
  • Fines: Any fines due are determined by the lending library. The AUR Library will not negotiate an inter-library loan for borrowers who do not respect the set due dates as this damages the relationship the AUR Library has with these libraries.
Instructional Programs

Information Literacy workshops are designed to introduce students to research (for academic purposes but not only) and to research paper writing. The aim of these workshops is to form information literate students. The workshops are designed to train students "to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information". (American Library Association).

The components of the workshops are;
  • Identifying and defining a topic
  • Gathering background information
  • Finding print and electronic materials
  • Using the Internet as a source of information
  • Evaluating material
  • Citing and referencing
Course related library instruction is designed to introduce students to library research strategies and to the basic information sources available for a particular class or subject.  The library staff works with the classroom instructor and develops an instructional session or sessions to meet the specific needs of the class.  Course related library instruction is one of the most effective ways of teaching students to use library materials and resources.  This is because they supplement subject-oriented training received in the classroom, with instruction in information resources and search techniques. The components of a course related instruction class:
  • Overview of relevant library resources, both print and electronic
  • Library search strategy using the online catalog and electronic databases
  • Finding and locating books
  • Finding and locating journal articles
  • Finding Internet resources
  • Critical evaluation of search tools and resources
