Professor Catherine Ramsey-Portolano co-edited the December 2010 special issue of UK literary journal The Italianist. The volume, entitled Rethinking Neera, comprises nine essays on the turn-of-the-century Italian woman writer Anna Radius Zuccari, in art Neera, by leading scholars from around the world. It also includes the first translation into English of Neera’s short story ‘Falena’ (1893), by Martha King. Prof. Ramsey-Portolano also contributed the essay “A modern reading of Neera’s maternal instinct” and co-wrote the Introduction.
The volume represents an important contribution to studies on Italian women writers. What differentiates the essays included in the supplement from previous Neera studies is their engagement with areas of enquiry to have emerged in recent years in cultural studies, gender studies, feminist literary studies and feminist philosophy.
