Interdisciplinary Workshop on Emperor Hadrian

On Monday, April 11, at 5.30 pm in the Auriana Auditorium, the International Relations Department, the Fine Arts Area and the Department of Archeology and Classics present: Interdisciplinary workshop on Emperor Hadrian with the participation of guest star M. Giorgio Albertazzi.

The seminar will highlight several aspects of the multifaceted historical figure of Emperor Hadrian who, according to a widely shared view, deserves to be extensively studied and revisited today for its remarkable modernity in various respects.

AUR’s Fine Arts Area Prof. Timothy Martin has invited Italy’s premier actor Giorgio Albertazzi to discuss Hadrian’s far-reaching influence on world literature (with a special emphasis on Marguerite Yourcenar’s romantic, written portrait “Hadrian’s Memoires”) and to talk about his own long standing theatre experience with this memorable character.

The seminar will also emphasize the following aspects:

Hadrian’s geostrategic vision, grounded on his remarkably secular philosophical approach. A special emphasis in this connection will be placed on his Near East policy (International Relations Prof. Bjorn Thomassen);

Hadrian’s Hellenistic cultural background, which inspired an impressive wealth of architectural and fine arts masterpieces (Archeology and Classics Prof. Valerie Higgins);

Hadrian’s homosexuality, with particular attention to his long lasting love story with Antinoos. The issue will be approached by presenting some of the most recent biopsychological research data regarding homo- and bisexuality in man and other species (International Relations Prof. Paul Crocchiolo).
