Plenary Paper by Thomassen

On Friday June 17 Professor Thomassen presented a paper at the 10th annual meeting of the International Social Theory Consortium, held at the UCC in Cork, Ireland. The theme for the conference was “Methods of Theorizing: Reflective Searches for Ways, Ideals and Measures”.

The title of Professor Thomassen’s paper was “Anthropology and Social Theory: Renewing Dialogue via the Classics”, and was presented in a panel dedicated to International Political Anthropology, the peer-reviewed Journal that Bjørn co-edits with Agnes Horvath and Harald Wydra.  The paper discusses the ways in which the discipline of anthropology may represent a perspective from where social theory can renew itself, and discusses in particular the concepts of liminality, gift-giving and schismogenesis.
