First Year in College (FTIC)
Admission to The American University of Rome is selective. Candidates for admission to the University are reviewed by the Admissions Committee. Students are selected without regard to age, race, sex, creed, national or ethnic origin or handicap. Requests for financial aid do not affect decisions on admission.
Candidates for admission must show evidence they have completed or anticipate completing a level of education equivalent to four years of high school.
Required Documents
Applicants from high school or a secondary school are required to submit:
- A completed application form accompanied by a non-refundable application fee of €50
- An official transcript of high school work
- One academic recommendation from the principal, a guidance counselor, teacher or professor
- Results of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or American College Test (ACT). Results of the SAT or the ACT examinations are only required for high school students graduating from a U.S. high school system, whether in the U.S. or abroad.
- Official TOEFL score or another English language proficiency exam for applicants whose native language is not English (Students whose English language skills need development may apply for the AUREA program in order to benefit from a full academic curriculum at The American University of Rome. Through this program students will develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in English while attending selected credit-based General Education courses at AUR)
- 500-word statement
- 250-word essay on one of three topics
- Interview
AUR requires a minimum high school GPA of 2.5 and a combined SAT total score of 1500 or 21 on the ACT. However each applicant is reviewed individually. Leadership, motivation, academic improvement, the level of the high school program’s difficulty, involvement in activities and potential for growth are important considerations in the application review process.
All documents must be original and sent from their original source (i.e. ETS Center, College Board, the high school/university and teacher/professor/counselor).
The American University of Rome SAT institutional code for reporting purposes is 0262. Information concerning the SAT may be obtained at College Board.
The American University of Rome ACT institutional code for reporting purposes is 5392. Information concerning the ACT may be obtained at ACT.
The American University of Rome TOEFL institutional code for reporting purposes is 0579. Information concerning the TOEFL may be obtained at TOEFL.
Interview

Home Schooled Students
Home schooled students follow the regular application process, however the following is also required:
- Transcripts of all home schooled work and details on the home schooling format (correspondence-based or parent/student based)
- One academic recommendation
- Results of the SAT or ACT exam
Advanced Standing
Advanced standing may be granted for academic credits earned at institutions outside the university system of the United States. Candidates in possession of credentials from European lyceums, such as the Italian Maturità, the International Baccalaureate, the British GCSE A levels and other equivalent programs will be evaluated and advanced credits granted on the basis of evaluation. In most instances, the first year of college (equivalent to 30 semester credits) may be granted. Students applying for advanced standing must submit official records of the last year of lyceum and a copy of the diploma if granted. If the records are not written in either English or Italian, the Admissions Office requires a certified translation into English.
Advanced standing may also be granted to students who receive a 3 or higher on any AP examination.
Deferred Admission
A student who has been accepted to The American University of Rome but cannot enroll immediately may request a deferral. A deferral can be granted up to one academic year after which the student must re-apply for admission to the University.
Visas and Stay Permits
All students who hold a non-European Union passport are required by law to obtain a student visa from the Italian consulate before departing from their home country. View detailed information on the process.
ACCUPLACER Examinations
All first-year students that are not transferring English and math credits (AP, IB etc.) must take the following ACCUPLACER examinations:
- Reading Comprehension
- Sentence Skills
- WritePlacer
- Elementary Algebra, and either Arithmetic or College-Level mathematics.
The tests are given at the beginning of each semester and the scores obtained will be used for English and mathematics placement.
