Scholarships

Deadline extended until March 15, 2010
The American University of Rome is committed to assisting students whose academic merit and financial need warrant support. AUR aims to give every student the opportunity to take advantage of a high quality education and, accordingly, offers several scholarships. All scholarships offered by AUR are renewable annually until degree requirements are met for a maximum of four years (depending which comes first).

Academic Merit Scholarships

Applicants will automatically be considered for the Academic Merit Scholarships if they meet the criteria below. The scholarships will pertain only to the fall and spring semesters and will be renewed annually as long as the recipient maintains a 3.3 cumulative GPA, taking a full-time course load in each of the fall and spring semesters (12 credits or more), does not receive a grade of F in any course, and has a record free of academic or social sanctions by the University.

Equivalent academic performance from countries using grading and testing systems dissimilar to the United States is used to determine Academic Merit Scholarship eligibility. Student applicants from International Baccalaureate programs with test scores of 5 or higher are automatically considered for the following scholarships.

€5,000.00 Presidential Scholarship
Awarded to any admitted student who meets the following criteria:

  • Has at least a GPA of: 3.5*
  • Has combined score of 1980 or above on the SAT
  • Or
  • Has a combined score of 30 or greater on the ACT

€3,500.00 Faculty Scholarship
Awarded to any admitted student who meets the following criteria:

  • Has at least a GPA of: 3.3*
  • Has combined score between 1800-1979  on the SAT
  • Or
  • Has a combined score between 27-29 on the ACT

€2,500.00 Alumni Scholarship
Awarded to any admitted student who meets the following criteria:

  • Has at least a GPA of: 3.3*
  • Has combined score between 1670-1799 on the SAT
  • Or
  • Has a combined score between 24-26 on the ACT

*GPA computed on a 4.0 scale including only one’s core academic courses.

AUR Scholarships

1. General AUR Scholarship:

We encourage all students to apply for a scholarship as we consider candidates not only based on grade point average, SAT or ACT scores (or the equivalent) but also special skills, talents and diversity they will bring to AUR. This scholarship also takes into account financial need. The scholarship will pertain only to the fall and spring semesters and will be renewed annually as long as the recipient maintains a 3.0 cumulative GPA, taking a full-time course load in each of the fall and spring semesters (12 credits or more), does not receive a grade of F in any course, and has a record free of academic or social sanctions by the University.

Application process:

    Please submit:
      1. an application
      2. brief letter of request to the Scholarship Committee
      3. a personal recommendation from a current professor
      4. Parent or Sponsorís official governmental financial statement
    a. Examples: FAFSA or Income Tax Statement
      CUD- Italian Citizens
      P60- UK citizens
      Declaration de Revenus

2. Terry Kirk Scholarship (New Scholarship)

This student scholarship is established in memory of Prof. Terry Rossi Kirk, Professor of Art History at AUR (1988 – 2009). The inaugural grant will be made for academic year 2010-2011.

3. Special scholarships for those who choose the following programs of studies:

Please note that unlike AUR many other schools reduce or do not renew grants or scholarships after the first year, you should always double check with the financial aid administrator for details when awarded funds.

Application deadlines for priority considerations:

  • Fall scholarships March 1 - Deadline extended until March 15
  • Spring scholarships October 1

School Specific Scholarships
US Community Colleges

Marymount College (California)
Broward Community College (Florida)
Broome Community College (New York)

Each of these schools will be offered annually one 50% tuition scholarship beginning at each academic year to be awarded on a competitive basis to an applicant recommended by the College who meets the following criteria:

  • Meets all AUR admissions requirements and is accepted through the usual application process
  • Holds or will earn an associate’s degree from the recommending College with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA

If more than one qualified applicant is recommended by the College, the Director of US Admissions will make the award. The Director of US Admissions will arrange for at least one campus visit each year to each of these community colleges. The scholarships will pertain only to the fall and spring semesters and will be renewed annually as long as the recipient maintains a 3.0 cumulative GPA taking a full-time course load in each of the fall and spring semesters (12 credits or more), does not receive a grade of F in any course, and has a record free of academic or social sanctions by the University.

High Schools with a Formal Bilateral Agreement with AUR

    American Overseas School in Rome (AOSR)- AUR
    AUR will offer benefits for AOSR graduates as follows:
  • One 50% tuition scholarship designated jointly by the Head of AOSR and the President of AUR from all applicants
  • 25% off tuition for any graduate that qualifies for admissions
  • Awardees of either type to be designated “Presidential Scholars” and eligible to be renewed as long as they maintain a B average or better.
    AUR will offer benefits for AOSR faculty as follows:
  • Access to AUR library upon registration with AUR library
  • 50% off tuition for courses taken
The above are agreed on a three year, renewable basis and will have immediate effect

    Montfort Academy New York
    AUR will offer benefits to Montfort Academy graduates as follows:
  • Two 50% tuition scholarship for any graduate that qualifies for admission that is recommended by a formal letter from the Headmaster
The above is agreed on a three year, renewable basis and will have immediate effect

Sons of Italy Foundation Scholarship
The Sons of Italy offers a scholarship of study at The American University of Rome for U.S. citizens of Italian descent (at least one Italian or Italian American grandparent) who will enter their sophomore, junior or senior year of college in Fall 2009. This scholarship ranges from $4,000 – $25,000. Applicants must be AUR degree-seeking students.

National Italian American Foundation Scholarship
The National Italian American Foundation offers a maximum of two scholarships for students attending The American University of Rome. Students with a 3.25 GPA can qualify if they are Italian-Americans or studying the Italian language and culture. Scholarship awards range from $2,000 – $5,000. Applicants are required to submit the following documents by March 5, 2010:
• On-line application.
• Teacher Evaluation form submitted online.
• An official school transcript submitted by mail.
• FAFSA Financial Aid Form (optional) submitted by mail.

For example, outside scholarships may be available to students whose parents work for a particular company or to students who are eligible for scholarships sponsored by a church, civic organizations or your home community.
