The Department of International Relations seeks a part-time instructor to teach the following courses in the Fall semester (Sept - Dec):
International Organizations (Mon/Wed 12.30-13.55. This course explores the role of international organizations in today¹s world. It will cover the genesis of these organizations from the Treaty of Westphalia, the League of Nations, to the creation of the United Nations. Special emphasis will be placed on the UN charter, the purpose and the structure of the UN, its membership and financing, and the role of the UN Secretary-General. Topics such as United Nations peacekeeping and human rights, economic development and cooperation, and contentious issues such as the expansion of the UN Security Council will also be discussed.
Introduction to Politics (T/Th 14.05-15.30). The course provides an introduction to the world of politics and the fundamentals of political science. It gives students a knowledge of the basic topics of politics:
power, government, nation, state; definitions and descriptions of forms of political behavior from democratic participation to revolutionary violence and the varieties of democratic and non-democratic forms of government.
The three Cs of War (Mon/Wed 9-10.25). The course examines how wars impact political, economic, and cultural developments in various countries. It examines both international and internal wars (including ethno-political and environmental conflicts) and their relative importance at different historic periods. It defines war, analyzes the reasons for the outbreak of war and the ways in which peace can be created. The course starts with a brief historic overview and then focuses in more detailon the wars of the end of the 20th century. The course also addresses the question how the occurrences of wars, their types, conduct and outcomes influence various developments in international and domestic systems. The course draws on the readings from international relations and comparative politics as well as works in political philosophy and history. The approach is comparative across time and space.

Survey of Western Civilization (Mon/Wed 10.30-11.55). The course is a survey history of western civilization from ancient Mesopotamia to Louis XIV. It covers historical methodologies and topics going from near Eastern beginnings, Greece and Rome, the development of Christianity, the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Reformation and European expansion.
Comparative Foreign Politics (Mon/Wed 14.05-15.30). The course examines today's main crises by comparing the attitudes, interests, ideologies and politics of the powers affected by them.
Political Movements in Europe (Tue/Thur 15.40-17.05). The course provides an in-depth look at the various political forces in Europe. Political parties, pressure and interest groupd, civil society and movements in the context of the EU.
The Developing World (Tue/Thur 17.15-18.40). The course give students a comprehnsive overview of the theory of and evidence on development from a broad and rigorous analytical base.
International Political Economy (Tue/Thur 9.00-10.25). An introductory course in IPE which examines the relationship between the global political and economic orders.

Description:
The Director of Enrollment Management is The American University of Rome’s enrollment planning and strategy leader, responsible for developing and implementing, in consultation with the President’s Senior Advisory Council of which the Director is a member, a worldwide enrollment management and recruitment plan, creating a marketing strategy for the University, and managing the US and Rome Offices of Admission.
Specific duties:
• Develop and implement an enrollment management plan
• Develop and implement a marketing plan, including strategies for raising the University’s profile locally and internationally
• Coordinate with the Director of Study Abroad in the context of the University’s enrollment management plan
• Supervise scholarship and financial aid processes
• Supervise the Director of Admissions and Financial Aid Administrator based in Rome and the US Director of Admissions based in Washington, DC
• Participate in the development of retention strategies and programs along with other members of the President’s Senior Advisory Council
Qualifications: A master’s degree and at least seven years of successful leadership experience in enrollment management or admissions, including international recruitment, experience with marketing in higher education, and evidence of success in increasing student diversity. Experience in American not-for-profit liberal arts higher education is preferred. A reasoned interest in living and working in Rome is essential.
