Department
of Business Studies - Curriculum
The Business Studies Program provides a broad,
professional foundation in all functional areas
of business. Students follow a structured, organic
core curriculum that introduces them to the various
functions (marketing, finance, operations, accounting)
of business, provides them with the quantitative
tools (algebra, statistics, computer science,
economics) necessary to understand and interpret
data, and introduces them to prevailing management
theories and paradigms as well as issues related
to legal and ethical concerns in the business
arena. Upper level courses incorporate case analyses,
group projects and creative problem solving. All
students spend their senior year completing two
courses designed to culminate the program: Decision
Making (quantitative methods), taken in the Fall
semester, and the capstone course, Strategic Management,
in the Spring semester. This course is a seminar-style,
case-based application of the tools and concepts
acquired in the first three years of study.
The program has an international focus with many
opportunities for students to explore the social
and cultural ramifications of operating in the
global economy. The nature of the student body
complements the international flavor of the program.
AUR Business students represent more than 30 different
countries.
Students armed with the AUR Business degree are
ready to begin their careers in business in the
fields of marketing, finance, manufacturing, sales,
advertising and management, and should be comfortable
working in either American or international settings.
The degree also provides a firm foundation for
MBA graduate study.
In addition to the classroom opportunities available
to Business students, special lectures and conferences,
field trips to business and industry sites across
Italy and on-campus networking and career fairs
are arranged each semester. Business students
are likewise strongly encouraged to take advantage
of one of the many study abroad opportunities
the University is developing (see ‘AUR Abroad
Program’ under ‘Special Programs’).
Currently AUR offers a Bachelor of Science in
Business Administration and an Associate of Applied
Arts in International Business. The BS program
requires successful completion of 120 credits
made up of a 42 credit general education requirement,
a 60 credit major and 18 credits of free electives,
which may be earned in four years of study. The
AAA program requires successful completion of
60 credits made up of a 24 credit general education
requirement, a 30 credit Business requirement
and six credits of free electives. Students must
achieve a cumulative grade point average of no
less than 2.0 on a 4-point scale, and earn at
least a C grade (2.0) in every course in the major
(60 credits).
