APRIL 7th—10th, 2008

Back by popular demand: The Department of Communication & English invites the entire AUR community to attend the fourth annual Communication & English Department Week. Communication & English Department Week is a series of evening events devoted to showcasing the work of both students and professionals in the field.

As in years past, the ever-popular Black Maria Film and Video Festival will kick off the week. The Black Maria Film and Video Festival tours US universities and film festivals every year, screening award-winning independent films and videos from around the world. This year’s festival line-up will include the Jury-Prize winning documentary Uno degli Ultimi (One of the Last), directed by Professor Paul Zinder, co-produced by Professor Maurizio Marmorstein, and edited by AUR Multimedia Lab Technician Heather Marie Miller.

Other events include the AUR Student Media & Photography Show, an evening devoted to student photography, films, videos, and other multimedia work. There will also be a guest lecture by Emmy-nominated producer, Laura Weinstein, who will give a presentation called "Yes, You Can Make a Living as a Documentary Filmmaker”. The closing event will be the AUR Student Reading and Remus Volume II Publication Party. Remus is the departmental literary journal devoted to publishing original student writing, as well as photography and artwork. This year’s issue contains creative work from over 20 AUR students and the evening reading will feature several of the students published in Volume II.

All events are free of charge and will be held in the AUR auditorium starting at 7pm each evening. Food and refreshments will be served.

End of Story

Luisa Sanchez, 23, has become the first Communication graduate to obtain a dual degree, the Italian laurea triennale, from a joint program at Macerata University, Facolta di Scienze della Comunicazione. This program enables AUR students to obtain both European and American degrees.
Luisa, who graduated May 2007, successfully presented her Capstone Senior Thesis to a committee of Communication faculty at Macerata University on July 5. The committee included the President of the Facolta di Scienze della Comunicazione, Prof. Maurizio Ciaschini.
It wasn't just the committee of professors who were there, Luisa said, there were hundreds of people, all the Macerata students presenting their own theses, and their families!

Luisa said she had enjoyed the experience. It was fun! When they told me I had passed they called me dottoressa!
Luisa was accompanied by Prof. Marcela Marambio from the Communication and English Department, who had to give a two-minute presentation introducing Luisa and her thesis topic to the committee.
Luisa's thesis discussed Canadian film director David Cronenberg and the Auteur  theory of filmmaking.
Luisa will soon be heading home to El Salvador, but hopes to return to Europe next year to go on to graduate studies in Film either here in Italy or perhaps in the U.K.
