Internship Program

The American University of Rome supports student endeavors to gain ‘real-world,’ practical work experience by offering various internship opportunities every semester. Academic internships for course credit provide students with a practical way of relating their studies to their career interests. The benefits of an internship include an enhanced ability to make informed career decisions, a greater appreciation for college coursework, increased marketability and the opportunity to obtain academic credit while gaining real experience. To apply for an internship, applicants must be enrolled as full-time junior or senior students and in good academic standing (GPA 2.0 or above). Academic internships are generally not practical for study abroad students who visit AUR for only one semester. Students who speak Italian well are more easily placed in internships in Rome and throughout Italy.

Graduate Cortney Healy accepted to
Peace Corps training program

AUR graduate Cortney Healy will depart for Morocco in September 2008 to start a three month Peace Corps training program before beginning two years of service as a volunteer.

Encouraged to apply by AUR professor Jeffrey Goldberg, Cortney submitted an application last summer and was accepted following a grueling process, consisting of background checks, US government applications, essays, and personal interviews. “To be placed in a program, you have to fill out different papers which target your specialty” Cortney said.

During her three months of training in Morocco Cortney will learn Arabic and French for eight hours a day. She will live with a home stay family and will have to follow their dress mannerisms and curfews.  She will be working with, and building, legitimate family owned or small business enterprises.  “Living with a Moroccan family will give me a cross-cultural understanding where I can return home and tell stories and the family will also learn more about Americans”.

Professor Goldberg encourages his students to pursue the Peace Corps because it is yet another option in terms of career orientation and continuing an international experience. “I encouraged Cortney to apply because I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Nigeria from 1965 to 1967. After learning Arabic and French Cortney will be what I like to call, a hot commodity for hiring” he said.

Aside from learning French and Arabic and adapting to a different culture, Cortney will also have to make different adjustments while living in Morocco.
“I did some research and found that one of the biggest things I'll be dealing with is water shortage and a lack of clean water,” she said.  “I'll most likely have to walk one to five miles per day to get clean water and be cautious of any fruits or vegetables that may have been cleaned in unclean water.”

Cortney is not the first AUR student to serve in the Peace Corps.  Andrea Romeo, one of Professor Goldberg's former students, has recently completed a health care program in Uruguay.  AUR’s Diplomat-in -Residence, Ambassador Borg also served in the Peace Corps in Vietnam.
