Italian Studies Program

The Italian Studies program has the following educational goals:
• to educate students to read, write, and speak Italian with proficiency
• to offer topic knowledge of the social, literary, and cultural history of Italy
• to endow students with skills in research, analysis, and critical thinking
• to provide students with the tools to experience directly, interact with, and appreciate the culture
• to prepare students to operate within today’s global world with the necessary intercultural skills
• to ensure students’ success for a career in administrative, professional, or business positions in Italy or for graduate training in the U.S. or Italy

The objectives of The American University of Rome’s general education program are:
• to develop and strengthen basic skills which will prepare students upon graduation for a modern working environment and which will be adaptable to a rapidly evolving economy
• to cultivate an awareness of, and sensitivity to, cultural, ethnic and social diversity and its importance in personal and professional decision making
• to expand the intellectual, cultural, societal, aesthetic and scientific horizons of students and enable them to discover not only the connections between academic disciplines but also the real life application of their knowledge
• to encourage active and responsible citizenship through knowledge of the forces shaping the actions of individuals and societies and through the development of critical thinking
