Undergraduate Degrees
All degrees conferred by The American University of Rome are approved by the Education Licensure Commission of the District of Columbia (Washington, DC, USA) and are authorized by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools. A degree can only be conferred when the degree candidate has satisfied both University and program requirements. Individual program requirements are set out in the relevant section of this publication. The conferred degrees and University graduation requirements are outlined in this catalog.
The College of Staten Island Articulation Program
All entering matriculated students at AUR are concurrently enrolled for the first 60 credits in The American University of Rome - College of Staten Island Articulation Program. This means that students at AUR may embark on a course of study that leads to a degree offered in the United States by the College of Staten Island. This offers students at AUR the option of transferring to the College of Staten Island in a seamless way should they choose to continue their studies in the U.S.
The College of Staten Island is one of the City University of New York’s most innovative and technologically advanced campuses. The College offers over sixty different degree programs in accounting, computer science, economics, psychology and many others. Students who wish to continue their studies at the College of Staten Island complete their general education requirements in Rome, then spend a period of residence at the College of Staten Island to complete their CUNY degree. Non-matriculating students can choose to be part of the articulation program by paying an additional fee. For further information please contact the Admissions Office.
Bachelor Degrees
The Bachelor of Arts degrees and the Bachelor of Science degree require completion of at least 120 semester hours of course work. At least forty-five of the last sixty semester hours must be completed in residence at The American University of Rome. Of the semester hours completed in residence at the University, no fewer than fifteen must be in upper division courses in the student’s major. All core courses in the major must be completed with a C grade average (2.0) or better. The bachelor degree programs offered by the University lead to conferment of the following degrees:
- Bachelor of Arts in Art History
- Bachelor of Arts in Communication
- Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies
- Bachelor of Arts in International Relations
- Bachelor of Arts in Italian Studies
- Bachelor of Science in Business Administration
Associate Degrees
The Associate of Arts and the Associate of Applied Arts degrees each require completion of at least 60 semester hours, of which no fewer than 30 must be taken in residence at The American University of Rome. The associate degree programs offered by the University lead to the conferral of the Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts and the Associate of Applied Arts in International Business. All major courses must be completed with a C grade average (2.0) or better.
Multiple Degrees
A student who has completed one bachelor degree may complete a second bachelor degree by accumulating a total of at least 150 semester hours and satisfying the major requirements of both degree programs.
General Education Requirements
All students must satisfy general education requirements as outlined in the ‘General Education’ section of the catalog.
Declaring a Major
Students intending to pursue a bachelor degree at The American University of Rome must declare their major by their junior year.
Minors
Minors require at least 18 credit hours of course work in the minor area; 12 of these credit hours must be taken at the junior or senior level. No more than six credit hours may be used to satisfy simultaneously the requirements of both a major and a minor. At least nine credit hours of the courses required for a minor must be taken in residence at The American University of Rome. Courses required for a minor must be completed with a C grade average (2.0) or better.
A student can declare no more than one minor. Minors do not appear on diplomas but are reported in transcripts. Minor requirements are listed in the relevant division sections of this catalog. The University currently offers minors in communications, art history, international business management, marketing, international relations and Italian studies.
Course Sequences and Prerequisite Requirements
Degree students must enroll in courses appropriate to their level of academic standing and their major and minor areas of study. Students must also satisfy the course prerequisites indicated in this catalog.
