Dear Student,
Congratulations on your acceptance to The American
University of Rome. As you already know, we offer
a unique college experience because with us you
get top quality American educational methods and
programs, in a nurturing and personalized environment,
while living in the heart of the Eternal City.
We look foward to helping you develop academically
and professionally as you discover the wonders
in store for you in Rome, Italy and Europe.
Our university campus is nestled
on the Janiculum Hill overlooking the city, between
the characteristic Trastevere and the elegant
Monteverde Vecchio neighborhoods. Soon you will
be receiving information on housing, and the courses
we offer, or browse this website to find out more
about us.
In your application you stated your
interest in majoring in Communication. Let me
tell you more about it, to perhaps answer some
questions, or merely accentuate your interest!
The Communication program at the
American University of Rome is the only one of
its kind, in English, in Italy. It offers a varied
selection of tracks to concentrate on: Visual Communication, Film and Communication History and Theory, and Writing for the Media.
It is also currently the only program at AUR that
offers a dual degree. Through an agreement with
the Università degli Studi di Macerata,
we are able to offer students the opportunity
to work towards the Italian “laurea triennale”
in Scienze della Comunicazione, if they choose
to pursue it.
Visual Media
Students in this track gain knowledge and practical experience in the production of material for visual media including photography, film, television, web and digital media.
Film and Communication History and Theory
This track focuses on communication and media studies, and offers courses on film history and theory, audiences, media laws and ethics, media and international relations, intercultural communication, popular music and a wide variety of related topics.
Writing for the Media
The writing track addresses professional media writing, including writing for journalism, radio, film, television and new media.
The Communication program also offers
a concentration in Film and Digital Media that
students may follow regardless of which track
they choose to focus on, and which is also open
to students majoring in any other program at The
American University of Rome.
As the umbrella program responsible for all English
language and literature courses at AUR, we also
offer a minor in English writing (creative, expository,
analytical) that attracts students from all majors.
Communication majors often intern
at local television or film production studios,
as well as in print journalism bureaus. AUR has,
for example, an internship agreement with The
Associated Press, the international news organization.
Other internships include the English Yellow Pages,
the Rome Independent Film Festival, and others.
While you are reflecting on all
these options, I invite you to contact me at m.romano@aur.edu
if you have any questions, or to discuss your
ideas and plans, and I hope I can help you make
the best decision.
Cordially,
Prof. Magda Romano,
Chair,
Department of Communication & English.
