All other students should send their documentation to the Admissions Office in Rome.
Home Schooled Students
Home schooled students follow the regular application process, however the following is also required:
- Transcripts of all home schooled work and details on the home schooling format (correspondence-based or parent/student based)
- Official college transcripts (if applicable)
- One academic recommendation
- Results of the SAT or ACT exam
Advanced Standing
Advanced standing may be granted for academic credits earned at institutions outside the university system of the United States. Candidates in possession of credentials from European lyceums, such as the Italian Maturita’, the International Baccalaureate, the British GCSE A levels and other equivalent programs will be evaluated and advanced credits granted on the basis of evaluation. In most instances, the first year of college (equivalent to 30 semester credits) may be granted. Students applying for advanced standing must submit official records of the last year of lyceum and a copy of the diploma if granted. If the records are not written in either English or Italian, the Admissions Office requires a certified translation into English.
Advanced standing may also be granted to students who receive a 3 or higher on any AP examination.
Transfer Students
The American University of Rome welcomes transfer students. Students with an equivalent of sixty semester credit hours of transfer credits may seek a waiver for the SAT and high school transcript requirement.
Upon receipt of complete official transcripts from all colleges and universities previously attended, the University shall determine the number of transfer credits to be accepted toward fulfilling the requirements for a degree at The American University of Rome. Transfer credits may be applied to satisfy the 42-credit General Education requirement, up to 50% of the requirements for a major and up to 18 credits of free electives. Transfer students are subject to all degree requirements described in the catalog in effect when they enter The American University of Rome. In addition, transfer students are subject to two residency requirements:
- For a Bachelor degree, a minimum of 45 credits must be earned at The American University of Rome. For an associate degree, a minimum of 30 credits must be earned at The American University of Rome.
- At least 50% of the credits used to satisfy the requirements for an academic major must be earned at The American University of Rome.
English Language Proficiency
Applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit scores from TOEFL or another English language proficiency exam. The language proficiency exam requirement may be waived for applicants who complete high school at English-speaking institutions.
The American University of Rome TOEFL institutional code for reporting purposes is 0579. Information concerning TOEFL may be obtained at www.toefl.org.
Deferred Admission
A student who has been accepted to The American University of Rome but cannot enroll immediately may request a deferral. A deferral can be granted up to one academic year after which the student must re-apply for admission to the University.
AUDIT
Non-degree students may register to audit a course at The American University of Rome. Students do not earn college credit for audited courses.
