Freshman

Admission to The American University of Rome is selective. Candidates for admission to the University are reviewed by the Admissions Committee. Students are selected without regard to age, race, sex, creed, national or ethnic origin or handicap. Requests for financial aid do not affect decisions on admission.

Candidates for admission must show evidence they have completed or anticipate completing a level of education equivalent to four years of high school.

Applicants for admission from high school or a secondary school are required to submit:

  • A completed application form accompanied by a non-refundable application fee of €30 or 35
  • An official transcript of high school work
  • Official university transcripts (for transfer students) from all institutions attended
  • One academic recommendation from the principal, a guidance counselor, teacher or professor.
  • Results of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or American College Test (ACT).
  • Results of the SAT or the ACT examinations are only required for high school students graduating from a U.S. high school system, whether in the U.S. or abroad
  • A 200 word statement on what your reasons are for wanting to attend AUR
  • A 500-600 word essay on one of three chosen topics

Each applicant is reviewed individually. Leadership, motivation, academic improvement, the level of the high school program’s difficulty, involvement in activities and potential for growth are important considerations in the application review process.

All transcripts, letters of recommendation and other supporting documentation must be submitted before the deadlines indicated below. A late application fee of €80 or $85 will be applied after the deadlines in lieu of the regular €30 or $35 application fee.

The American University of Rome SAT institutional code for reporting purposes is 0262.

The American University of Rome ACT institutional code for reporting purposes is 5392.

• US & Canadian students should send their documentation to the US Admissions Office in Washington, DC.

• All other students should send their documentation to the Admissions Office in Rome.

Home Schooled Students

Home schooled students follow the regular application process, however the following is also required:

  • Transcripts of all home schooled work and details on the home schooling format (correspondence-based or parent/student based)
  • Official college transcripts (if applicable)
  • One academic recommendation
  • Results of the SAT or ACT exam

Advanced Standing

Advanced standing may be granted for academic credits earned at institutions outside the university system of the United States. Candidates in possession of credentials from European lyceums, such as the Italian Maturitá, the International Baccalaureate, the British GCSE A levels and other equivalent programs will be evaluated and advanced credits granted on the basis of evaluation. In most instances, the first year of college (equivalent to 30 semester credits) may be granted. Students applying for advanced standing must submit official records of the last year of lyceum and a copy of the diploma if granted. If the records are not written in either English or Italian, the Admissions Office requires a certified translation into English.

Advanced standing may also be granted to students who receive a 3 or higher on any AP examination.

Interview

Interviews are required of all applicants. They may be conducted face-to-face or on the phone. Applicants are encouraged to schedule an interview prior to applying so as not to delay the review of a completed application.

Deferred Admission

A student who has been accepted to The American University of Rome but cannot enroll immediately may request a deferral. A deferral can be granted up to one academic year after which the student must re-apply for admission to the University.

Application Deadlines

Fall Semester March 1
Spring Semester November 1
Summer Session April 1

Applications received after the priority deadline are considered based on space availability. Admission to AUR is made on a rolling basis. We will provide you with an admissions decision as soon as possible upon receipt of all of the application requirements.

Visas and Permits to Stay

All students who hold a non-European Union passport are required by law to obtain a student visa from the Italian consulate before departing from their home country. Students attending The American University of Rome through a study-abroad program with one of our affiliated U.S. universities will receive assistance from the U.S.-based program coordinator in obtaining a visa.

Students applying directly to AUR must present their application for a student visa to the Italian consulate which serves their place of residence. The process generally takes at least one month. Students should check with the consulate to make sure they have all the necessary documents before presenting their application. AUR is able to assist in verifying the status of the student. Please contact admissions@aur.edu should you require assistance.

Please note: It is not possible to change visa status once in Italy. If a student arrives on a tourist visa his or her status cannot be changed to a student visa.

Stay Permit

Upon arrival in Rome, all students (including EU citizens), will sign up for an appointment to obtain a permesso di soggiorno per studio (student permit to stay in Italy), which is issued by the local authorities at the Questura (police station). Students are also required to purchase health insurance. The Student Services Office will help students with obtaining their first stay permit and can also help with obtaining health insurance. Further information on mandatory health insurance can be found in the ‘Student Life’ section of this catalog.

Proficiency Examination

All registering students, whether new first-year students or transfer students, must take The American University of Rome proficiency tests in reading, writing and mathematics. The tests are given at the beginning of each semester and the scores obtained will be used for English and mathematics placement.
