Francesco Guccini Awarded Honorary Degree

An Honorary Degree was conferred by AUR on Italian singer, song writer and author Francesco Guccini on Monday, May 21, during AUR’s Commencement ceremony.

Guccini, regarded as one of Italy’s most prominent cultural icons and most important cantautori, but also an accomplished writer of fiction, was recognized for his “long and distinguished career, the integrity of his work, his openness towards people and cultures and for his commitment to values of freedom of thought and expression”.

Guccini’s verses have been praised for their poetic and literary value and have entered into the canon of modern Italian poetry. Inspired by musicians such as Bob Dylan, his songs have also contributed to bring to Italy a piece of America, a country he first discovered through the stories of his great uncle Amerigo who emigrated there then returned to Italy, and later through the literature and music of the Beat Generation.
