Intensive Academic English Language Course
A bridge to The American University of Rome: improve your English and take the option of a 3-credit course
What the Program is About
AUR Intensive Academic English Language course is the ideal “bridge program” for students whose English language level is intermediate or upper-intermediate and need development in order to benefit from a full academic curriculum at The American University of Rome and elsewhere. Students will develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in English. While attending the English course, as an option, students can also enroll to one of our 3-credit courses in Italian studies, fine arts or math.
Who Can Participate
Non English mother tongue students who wish to improve their English level significantly in the time span of a semester, whose TOEFL scores are at least 49 or IELTS scores are 4.5.
Students with no TOEFL or IELTS certification are offered an English evaluation test at no cost at The American University of Rome. The next tests will be held on:

Program Benefits
Gain access to The American University of Rome Degree programs or to any other university with an English bachelor, master o PhD level curricula.
Program Dates
Fall semester: from the end of August to mid December. Monday through Thursday. 4 academic hours (each of 50 minutes) a day, for a total of about 207 hours of instruction.
Spring semester: from the end of January to mid May. Monday through Thursday. 4 academic hours (each of 50 minutes) a day, for a total of about 207 hours of instruction.
English Language classes are held in the afternoons, while the other optional Academic courses for credit are held in the mornings.

Program Fees
Intensive Academic English Language Course: € 3,250 (207 hours of instruction)
AUR Academic Course: € 610 per credit
The cost includes:
- Access to wireless campus library, computer lab, media lab, garden and all other university facilities.
- English language course books
- Participation in AUR non academic activities
- Access to AUR lectures and events
Program Structure
| I. The Intensive Academic English Language Course - Intermediate/B2 or Upper-Intermediate/C1 |
| In the Intermediate Level Course, the emphasis is on consolidating core English academic and social speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, concentrating on grammar and vocabulary, communicative fluency and pronunciation. The course covers one academic semester, for a total of 207 contact hours. In order to be enrolled in the Intermediate level course, students must have an English language level of at least TOEFL 49/IELTS 4.5 or equivalent. |
| In the Upper-Intermediate Level Course, the English Language skills are extended, developing further essential strategies for note-taking, presentations, and essay writing; applying them in the specific context of The American University of Rome First Year Program. The course covers one academic semester, for a total of 207 contact hours. In order to be enrolled in the Upper-Intermediate level course, students must have an English language level of at least TOEFL 59/IELTS 5.5 or equivalent. |
| II. Academic Courses at AUR |
| Students enrolled in either Intermediate or Upper-Intermediate level courses are eligible to enroll simultaneously in one of AUR’s academic courses in the areas of Italian Studies, Mathematics, and Fine Arts. These courses will apply towards AUR baccalaureate degree or may be transferred. |
