THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF ROME
The American University of Rome (AUR) is a private, independent American institution of higher education in Rome, Italy, offering liberal studies and professional courses in an international environment that promotes cross cultural understanding. The University offers American degree programs primarily to undergraduate students.
Founded in 1969, The American University of Rome is the oldest degree-granting American university in Rome. AUR is a coeducational university offering undergraduate degrees in six disciplines, and has a student body of 450 students per semester (Spring 2004).
AUR is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) in the United States and is licensed by the Educational Licensure Commission of the District of Columbia (Washington, DC, USA). AUR is incorporated in the District of Columbia as a nonprofit corporation.

FACILITIES AND ACADEMIC RESOURCES
The University is located in a prestigious area of Rome on the Janiculum, Rome’s highest hill, just a few minutes walk from the historical Trastevere district. The administrative offices, computer labs, classrooms and a student lounge are found in a four-story villa. Adjacent to the villa, a five-story building houses the library, faculty offices, classrooms, science lab, darkroom and film production laboratory. The new auditorium has a seating capacity of 99 and is equipped with a full range of multimedia technology. Off-campus facilities include an art studio, design and architecture studios and nearby faculty and administrative offices.
Faculty representation spans all five continents and our student body encompasses over 30 countries. The American University of Rome is proud of its 60 plus committed and experienced faculty members, holding advanced degrees in their respective fields. Each class at AUR is taught by a faculty member and classes are small enough to ensure personal attention for each student. The average class size ratio at AUR is 1:17, which underlines the University’s commitment to active learning and lively classroom discussion. Each semester over 110 courses are available across the six degree disciplines, as well as various internships and independent study opportunities.
