Frequently Asked Questions – Top Questions Asked @ AUR
1. How do I get Internet
access on my laptop?
For wired Internet access students can plug into
a network outlet located in the main computer
lab or the reference area of the library. Internet
access should be automatically detected, however,
if you experience problems please seek help from
staff in the Office of Computer Services.
Wireless Internet access is
available from indoor and outdoor locations. For
Indoor access your laptop should detect the connection
automatically. Outdoor wireless access requires
a WEP Key. Please see the Office of Computer Services
for further information.
2. Where can I buy computer supplies and accessories?
There is a computer supply and accessory store
in the neighborhood. From the university, go to
Via Carini and turn left. Walk straight until
Banca Di Roma, make a right at that corner. The
store is only 50mt. on the left.
3. Why can’t
I download programs on to a computer in the computer
labs?
Computers in the labs are available to students
with standard user access. Installing programs
is only permitted for academic purposes. If you
need to install a program please see a lab assistant
on duty in the computer labs or seek support from
the Office of Computer Services.
4. How do I obtain
an AUR E-Mail account?
AUR degree seeking students are assigned an AUR
e-mail account at the beginning of their first
semester of study. Study abroad students may request
an AUR e-mail account from the Office of Computer
Services, once they arrive in Rome.
5. My laptop doesn’t work/has a virus; can your office fix it for me?
The Office of Computer Services cannot perform
repairs or adjustments to personal computers under
any circumstance. We can, however, provide recommendations
for competent repair persons. It is recommended
that students purchase extended warranties for
their computers, as well as installing a valid
and up-to-date virus protection software before
connecting their computer to the network.
6. How do I access
the computers in the Computer Labs?
A detailed information leaflet is available in
both computer labs giving instructions on how
to log on to the computers.
7. Does your campus
have/support Apple computers?
AUR has a computer lab reserved for Communications
students that is equipped with Apple G5 computers.
These computers are connected to the Internet
and have professional grade editing and design
software relevant to the Communications Program.
Students wishing to use these computers must be
enrolled in the Communications Program.
8. What kind of power
accessories do I need for my laptop?
Nowadays most laptop power supplies support multiple
voltage standards. If the description on your
laptop power supply reads “Input:100V –
240V” then you will only need a plug adapter
to connect your laptop. This is a small piece
that will change only the type of the plug and
should not cost more than $5.00 at Radio Shack
or a hardware store. Do not use a power converter
as it may damage your computer.
Recommendations for bringing
a computer to AUR
AUR neither encourages
nor discourages students from bringing laptops
to Rome, but under no circumstances is the univesity
responsible for loss or damage to these devices
whether on or off campus. If you do decide to
bring your laptop you should consider doing the
following:
- Bring your installation
CDs and manuals in case unexpected problems
force you to reload or reconfigure your system.
- If you are arriving from
a country with different voltage standards,
be sure to bring the appropriate adapter or
converter. Note: Most laptops need only an adapter,
not a converter. Check with manufacturer if
unsure.
- Keep a record of your computer
configuration and serial number.
- Purchase a warranty that
covers international travel and use the on-line
support provided which includes security updates.
- If you wish to access the
wireless connection available on campus, make
sure you have a wireless card installed.
- Please ensure that you
have an up to date antivirus software program
installed.
<- Always ensure that your computer operating
system is updated with the latest security patches.
